Please use the following guidelines to help you decide when it’s time to repot!

.) you received an orchid as a gift from a florist or unknown source:  Any new orchid from an unknown source should be repotted once it has finished flowering.  This will let you know what’s going on with the roots, and get it on your own repotting schedule!

.) your plant is in sphagnum moss and it has been more than one year since it was repotted.  Sphagnum breaks down quickly and accumulates fertilizer salts which can harm tender roots.

.)  your plant is in a bark mixture and has not been repotted for two or more years, OR is in bark and when you water from the top of the pot, the water is not running out the bottom just as quickly.  Bark breaks down, and can retain too much moisture, and soggy roots lead to dead and rotten roots!

.)  your plant is literally climbing out of its pot!  Many orchids will outgrow their pots within a year of being repotted.  If it’s too big for its britches, give it bigger britches!

.) your plant is just not doing well.. It’s not growing properly, the new growth is pleated or stunted, leaves are turning dull or getting floppy.. .any sign that a plant is unhappy is a good reason to at least dump it out of its pot to look at the roots!   Ailing plants will often have miraculous recovery after repotting!
